Coconut Tree - The Tree of Life

The coconut palm, Cocos nucifera, is a member of the family Arecaceae (palm  family). It is the only accepted species in the genus Cocos. The term coconut can refer to the entire coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which is not a botanical nut. The spelling cocoanut is an old-fashioned form of the word. The term is derived from 16th century Portuguese and Spanish cocos, meaning "grinning face", from the three small holes on the coconut shell that resemble human facial features.

Found across much of the tropic and subtropic area, the coconut is known for its great versatility as seen in the many domestic, commercial, and industrial uses of its different parts. Coconuts are part of the daily diet of many people. Its endosperm is initially in its nuclear phase suspended within the coconut water. As development continues, cellular layers of endosperm deposit along the walls of the coconut, becoming the edible coconut "flesh". When dried, the coconut flesh is called copra. The oil and milk derived from it are commonly used in cooking and frying; coconut oil is also widely used in soaps and cosmetics. The clear liquid coconut water within is a refreshing drink and can be processed to create alcohol. The husks and leaves can be used as material to make a variety of products for furnishing and decorating. It also has cultural and religious significance in many societies that use it.

This is is called the tree of life because it has so many uses. It has full of vitamins. Coconut is is found in any place like Philippines. We have many coconut tree in our farm land in Bohol. I enjoy eating fresh fruits of this tree when Im just a kid. Today, it cost P20 pesos per piece of a coconut in the city if you buy from coconut vendors. More info about the coconut tree click here

A nice day in Nice France!

The city of Nice is a perfect destination for great summer holidays with family or friends. Located in the South of France near Italy, on the French Riviera, Nice has been a popular destination for quite a long time.

Nice is the second most visited city in France after Paris, and well-known worldwide for its famous ‘Promenade des Anglais’. This old city is full of color and its carnival is the oldest and largest in France.

Explore this wonderful city, it will bring you pleasure and awaken your senses. As it is not always easy to know what to do on a day in an unfamiliar city, here is an example for spending a nice day in Nice!

The sun begins to shine, the cicadas (crickets) and seagulls start making noise … it is time for you to get up and leave your hotel in Nice in order to make the most of your day.

Start your day enjoying a French breakfast at the “Pietonnerie” (Rue Massena / Rue de France). Here you will find many sorts of coffee served, and they offer a very copious breakfast.

From there terrace you can enjoy the city that’s slowly waking up. Now that you’re a little more awake too, you’ll be able to see more of the charm and beauty that Nice has to offer.

Start at “Cours Saleya“: wander through the beautiful and vibrant flower market. It was classified by the National Council of Culinary Arts as one of the most beautiful French markets. The colors and smells awaken your senses, no doubt about that!

Next; take advantage strolling through the old town nearby when it’s not yet that busy. You can admire the charming old town with its ancient facades of yellow & orange that recall the colors of close by Italy. This is also an opportunity to discover many shops selling local products such as olive oil, spices and local vegetables. The admission to the Palais Lascaris, an ancient aristocratic palace in Nice, is free. It now houses the municipal museum of popular arts and traditions since 1970.

As you are in the old town anyway, I can recommend “Place Garibaldi” for a visit, it’s very close – in the north. This place was once called “Place Vittorio” and it’s one of the many iconic locations in Nice. You can admire magnificent architecture that is inspired by the royal squares typical of Baroque urbanism.

Here is the few image of Nice France below.. Enjoy!

Nice is really a nice place. The city is called Nice La Belle(Nissa La Bella in Nicard), Which means Nice the Beautiful, which is also the title of the unofficial anthem of Nice, written by Menica Rondelly in 1912. Nice is the capital of Alpes Maritimes department and the second biggest city of the Provence- Alpes-Cote dAzur region after Marseille. More info about Nice France please visit wikipedia.

The Sinulog Festival

The Sinulog is an annual festival  held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City, Philippines. The festival commemorates the Cebuano people's pagan origin, and their acceptance of Roman Catholicism.

The features a street parade with participants in bright coloured costumes dancing to the rhythm of drums, trumpets and native gongs. Smaller versions of the festival are held in various parts of the province, also to celebrate and honor the Santo Niño. There is also a "Sinulog sa Kabataan" performed by the youths of Cebu a week before the parade. Recently, the festival has been promoted as a tourist attraction, with a contest featuring contingents from various parts of the country. The Sinulog Contest is usually held in the Cebu City Sports Complex.
 Sinulog Festival - Fluvial Procession

Sinulog Procession

The Sinulog celebration lasts for nine days, culminating on the final day with the Sinulog Grand Parade. The day before the parade, the Fluvial Procession is held at dawn with a statue of the Santo Niño carried on a pump boat from Mandaue City to Cebu City, decked with hundreds of flowers and candles. The procession ends at the Basilica where a re-enactment of the Christianizing (that is, the acceptance of Roman Catholicism) of Cebu is performed. In the afternoon, a more solemn procession takes place along the major streets of the city, which last for hours due to large crowd participating in the event.

History

On April 5, 1521, the Portuguese  explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived and planted the cross on the shores of Cebu, claiming the territory for Spain. He presented the image of the child Jesus, the Santo Niño, as baptismal gift to Hara Amihan, wife of Rajah Humabon. Hara Amihan was later named, Queen Juana in honor of Juana, mother of Carlos I. Along with the rulers of the island, some 800 natives were also baptized to the Roman Catholic Church. At the moment of receiving the holy image, it was said that Queen Juana danced with joy bearing this image of the child Jesus. With the other natives following her example, this moment was regarded as the first Sinulog.

This event is frequently used as basis for most Sinulog dances, which dramatize the coming of the Spaniards and the presentation of the Santo Niño to the Queen. A popular theme among Sinulog dances is Queen Juana holding the Santo Niño in her arms and using it to bless her people who are often afflicted by sickness caused by demons and other evil spirits.

Cute and Pretty Cebuana

The City of Cebu (Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Sugbo) is the capital city of Cebu and is the "second city" in the Philippines, the second most significant metropolitan centre in the Philippines and known as the oldest settlement established by the Spaniards in the country.

The city is located on the eastern shore of Cebu and was the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. Cebu is the Philippines' main domestic shipping port and is home to about 80% of the country's domestic shipping companies. Cebu also holds the second largest international flights in the Philippines and is a significant centre of commerce, trade and industry in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. According to the 2009 LGPMS census, the city has a population of about 822,628 people.

Cebu City is the centre of a metropolitan area called Metro Cebu, which includes the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay. Metro Cebu has a total population of about 2 million people. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, located in Lapu-Lapu City is only a twenty-minute drive away from Cebu City. To the northeast of the city are Mandaue City and the town of Consolacion, to the west are Toledo City, the towns of Balamban and Asturias, to the south are Talisay City and the town of Minglanilla. Across Mactan Strait to the east is Mactan Island where Lapu-Lapu City and an aquarium attraction are located.
